The Cherrybark Oak tree, `Quercus falcata var. pagodifolia,' is a highly valued red oak throughout the South. Larger and better formed than southern red oaks, this variety will even grow on wetter sites. The acorns produced are used as food by wild animals and birds. This fast growing Oak tree will make a fantastic shade tree. It is also commonly called the Bottomland red oak, Swamp red oak, Spanish oak and Elliot oak.
The Chestnut Crabapple tree is an excellent pollinator for other fruit apple trees. It blooms in early to mid-May, and produces a very large crabapple, up to two inches in diameter. The fruits ripen in early September, and have a pleasant, nut-like flavor. The outstanding flavor and good texture of the fruits make this tree just as good for eating as it is at pollinating other fruit trees. This tree is very hardy and the fruits have a medium storage life. The fruit quality holds very well on the tree.
The Chestnut Oak Tree, `Quercus prinus,' is a slow growing and long-lived tree. This native deciduous tree is medium sized. The dark and very rough bark is a characteristic of an Oak tree. When mature, this bark is commonly broken into long, V-shaped ridges that are separated by deep furrows. The Chestnut oak is free of any major pests and diseases, and is a testament to superior genetics in all aspects of its growth. The Chestnut Oak is also known as the Rock oak, Rock Chestnut oak and Mountain oak.
The Knock Out rose produces deep, almost fluorescent cherry red blooms with five to seven petals each that give off a light tea rose fragrance. Its cycle of bloom and growth will provide for a continuous show of color from spring through late fall. This is a wonderful example of disease resistance at its best. It has low water requirements and shows a decent tolerance to salt and alkaline soils. The Kousa Dogwood is commonly planted as a specimen, near a patio or in groups.
The Kwanzan Flowering Cherry Tree, `Prunus serrulata Kwanzan,' will rapidly grow to its mature height of twenty to thirty feet. This deciduous tree is one of the most popular flowering cherry trees available on the market. It has clear pink, double blooms, with multiple petals like a carnation. The flowering period is three weeks long. Once the blooms have been spent, they will give way to light green foliage that has a red tinge. This beautiful ornamental flowering tree is also known as the Japanese Flowering Cherry Tree.
The Lacebark Elm Tree, `Ulmus parvifolia,' is a very hardy and tough deciduous shade tree. It is a great tree for urban conditions because it is capable of withstanding harsh climates, poor soil and air pollution. Its gray bark will start to exfoliate and peel off in small patches as the trunk matures. This will result in a patchwork of mottled colors beneath, including green, orange, brown and gray.
